"I got the rockin' pneumonia and the boogie woogie flu."

Happy Friday, Loves! Linkin up with Joy at The Sowell Life for The Friday Five.

1. I sound like Lindsay Lohan after a 3 day bender. And sadly, I look more like Charlie Sheen circa February 2011.
I've got the flu.
What. A. Bitch.
I don't understand. I received my flu shot like a good nurse. I wash my hands. I use hand gel. I sneeze into my elbow.
4 years of running myself ragged, working full-time as an RN exposed to some of the world's worst diseases, on immunosuppressants, in school full-time, partying full-time.
 Never once got the flu.
This year, I'm not working, I'm not in school, I don't get out much and
BAM!
The flu.
I call bullshit.

This... is awesome sauce wrapped in bacon!

2. I received this email from my sister-in-law Cindy...

Hi - Each month our department has a jeans day and the money raised from it is donated to various organizations.  This month I had asked to have one for Lupus and we raised over $300:)  Just wanted to share before I forgot!

“Jeans Day – Today, 2/8/13”
Benefits: Lupus Foundation of America

Please give your $5.00 Donation to ** or **
Please refrain from wearing jeans if you do not wish to give a donation. It is not fair to all of those who do donate. FYI - We do keep track of who donates. Thank you

The Lupus Foundation of America National Research Program: Bringing Down the Barriers™ aggressively seeks to advance the science and medicine of lupus and to improve the quality of life for people with lupus.

We convene lupus experts from many medical specialties to identify the most urgent scientific challenges, and we aggressively pursue an agenda to find answers to the most difficult questions.
The Lupus Foundation of America national research program has a unique three pronged strategy: lead special initiatives, fund researchers, and advocate for expanded investment.

For nearly 40 years, research supported by the Lupus Foundation of America has led to expanded understanding of the disease and contributed to many of the lupus-related scientific breakthroughs of the past several decades.

Since its inception, the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) has provided $23 million to support more than 400 grants to research scientists at nearly 100 leading academic and medical institutions throughout the nation. The LFA is proud and honored to have provided seed grants to many of the leading lupus researchers in the world.

These grants have not only led to tens of millions of dollars in additional research, but have also contributed to many of the lupus-related scientific breakthroughs of the past several decades. LFA-funded Investigators have published in such prestigious peer-reviewed journals as Science, Nature, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Immunity, and Genes and Immunity.

What an amazing thing, and I was flattered that she would think of me. Lupus is not a disease that receives much "publicity," and when it does, I tend to believe it's not accurately depicted how devastating the disease can be. Every last cent that goes to funding research helps.
Thank you, Cindy! <3

3. I've noticed the sun is coming up earlier and going down later. This makes me happy. Spring is less than a month away. March 20th is one of my favorite days of the year, even when it's cold. There was a family owned water ice stand a block away from my parents house, and I was always that jack-ass in my winter coat getting water ice on March 20th just because it was the first day of spring and the first day it was open.

4. I've kinda become obsessed with these...

Pure genius. Why didn't I think of this??

5. Mine and Hubby's FIVE year anniversary is next week!!! I do not know where the time has gone.
5 years is a milestone, right? According to Yahoo's Yearly Guide to Anniversary Gift Giving, the 5th anniversary is the year of wood.
Um. Right. Like I could not make some kind of pecker joke.

In honor of "wood," a poem for Hubby

Enjoy the weekend! It's Oscar time!!! I'm thinking my invitation to be Bradley Cooper's date got lost in the mail. But luckily, my close and personal friend Mr Michael Kors said I could wear this ole thing if I get invited last minute.

Love you all <3

  1. 1. That sucks! I've never had the flu (knock on WOOD). Hope you feel better soon!
    2. Being completely honest you are only the 2nd person I've ever "heard" speak about lupus. The other time was one of the girls on America's Top Model in an early season that has it. Did you ever see that?

And yay for The Oscars! I'm a little too excited that my boyfriend, Seth is hosting!

    1. I replied via email, but I think you're a no-reply blogger which means it went into the black hole of the inter webs. So here is what I emailed you...

I loooooove Seth! My Hubs is always like "really?? You think he's hot?!??!" Um. YEAH!!!!!!

The flu sucks. The only thing you can do is let it "run its course." LAME

Lupus is a pretty unknown disease. Toni Braxton & Nick Cannon both have it, and it makes me sad how much they downplay it to the media. I mean, I know they don't want to be known for being sick, but there is so much they could do as far as advocacy. I guess I just have to wait til I get famous :-P

  2. So pissed off that you have the flu on top of everything else. BLAH

I do love your wood rhyme sign.

That's awesome that your sister in law did that! Every little bit counts.

  3. THE FLU? You've got to be kidding me!!! However, I was watching GMA this morning and they said the flu shot is only 56% effective this year. REALLY?

How awesome of your sister in law!! And I agree with Alyssa, I had only heard about it once before, and never knew anyone with it until we "met." Praying for you girl!

I'm ready for spring: the colors, and longer sunnier days but I could do without the pollen junk!

I've got to get one of those outlets. I wonder if our Lowes has them?

I'm laughing at the poem. And since our 1st anniversary is March 12th... I got the Mr something paper (tickets to see Jerry Seinfeld) and I plan to do something along that list every year. But yes, I think "wood" will be hard. ;)

  4. I've never visited your blog, though I see it on the link ups sometimes and keep meaning to. The first thing I noticed was the title of this post. I LOVE that song, lol!

I'm definitely sorry to hear that you have the flu. :( Hope you can kick that flu's ass very soon!

Cindy is great! My friend has Lupus and I find a lot of people don't really even know what it is. Glad Cindy is doing something to change that!

I can't wait for spring myself. I'm sick of all this snow and cold stuff.

Those outlets look nifty! Wonder where you can get them...

    Happy anniversary! And happy weekend!

Good luck with that last minute invite :)

I am PUMPED for the Oscar's because my lesbian lover Jennifer Lawrence will be there. I'm going to french kiss the screen when I see her. Kidding. Kinda.

Get well soon hun!! Get lots of rest and watch bad TV!!

    XOXOXOXOXOXO

  7. Dude. Seriously? The flu? That blows.

I'm so ready for spring. It's not even like this winter has been super horrible, but I hate the cold, grey days.

  8. Stopping by from Joy's link up! Wow! So a good friend of mine has Lupus, and we raise money for our team every year and participate in the Walk for Lupus 5K! It's coming up in May, and I am soooo excited! But you are right - I never see much on it at all!

I hope you feel better soon. Tell they Bitch Flu to leave you alone!
